How to Move in with a Friend and Stay Friends

move in, friend, couple

Moving in with someone, friend or not, is a tough ask. Sometimes we need our alone time, and sometimes we want to party. It’s tough to find a person that will be in the same mood as you all time, but the key is compromise. At North Shore Mini Storage we deal with people moving in together all the time. So here are some tips for making it work. COVID-19 has hit us all hard, and sometimes you have to bite the bullet and ask for help.

How to Move in with a Friend

Even if you don’t know the person, this advice still applies.

Make it Funfun, jumping

It’s exciting, moving into a new place and turning it into a home. So you and your new roommate should make it as fun as you can. Take some time to turn your new home into YOUR home and decorate it anyway you want. A day trip to IKEA sounds like a pretty good way to spend the day, and the Mac&Cheese is to die for.

calendar, to doSchedule

Who takes out the garbage on Monday? It is a question you don’t want to be fighting over on Sunday night. Make a concrete  schedule that you both agree to for general household duties. The more transparent things are the smoother it will be.

Budget

Money can be a huge source of frustration and fighting. Make sure that both of you are together for any big purchases for the house. Understand how much rent and utilities are before you move in and make an agreement to pay. We suggest food bills be kept separate, everyone eats different things.

Communicatecommunication, talking, friends

Communication is key in any relationship. If something bothers you, speak up and don’t let it come to boil. By speaking openly about things that annoying you, you are less likely to fight. Trust us, good communication is half the battle to a peaceful house.

We wish you well in your move. If you need some storage for some of your moving items, you know who to call.
