Nobody likes moving, even though it can be exciting, it’s a very scary time. If you have a moving to a new city, there are a few steps you need to take to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. So let’s get down to the top 5 things you must do when you move to a big new city.

5 Things to do Before Moving to a New City

1. Watch The News

Make sure it’s the local news too, this will give you a good grasp on a few different, important aspects of the city. The amount of crime, the political climate, events, attractions and just about anything else relative to the place you are moving. Do not underestimate the power of local news.

2. You Aren’t a Tourist

Skip the tourist stuff and focus on things that locals do. This will give you a much better taste of the new city you are moving too. Tourist attractions are often time manufactured versions of what people want the city to be, not what it actually is.

3. Talk To People

I’ll admit I would never do this, but it’s an important thing to try to do before you move. Talk to locals and ask all about the city, its problems, its highlights, etc. Speaking to locals is hands down the best way to get to know your new home. Also, local internet forums are a good substitute.

4. Traffic

If bad traffic is a no-no for you, make sure to drive in rush hour. This will give you a good feel of how great or bad the cities roads and infrastructure is. It will also help when looking for a place to live.

5. Airbnb

What’s the slogan? “Live Here”. That’s exactly what you should do, pretend to live there. Airbnb is a great tool for this, rent a local apartment and just pretend, grocery shop, go to bars, see the city, etc. This is probably the best thing to do before you move to a new city.
